Understanding Typhoid in Pakistan
Pakistan accounts for a significant portion of global typhoid cases. Poor sanitation and contaminated water are the primary causes. The emergence of XDR (extensively drug-resistant) typhoid in Sindh has made treatment more challenging.
Diagnosis
Blood culture remains the gold standard. Typhidot and Widal tests are commonly used but have limitations. CBC typically shows leukopenia.
Treatment Protocol
Azithromycin is now the first-line antibiotic for uncomplicated typhoid in Pakistan. For XDR typhoid, Azithromycin or Meropenem may be required. Treatment duration is typically 7-14 days.
