High Fever in Children: When to See a Doctor
A fever above 102°F in children can be alarming. Learn when home remedies are enough and when you need emergency medical care.
Understanding Fever in Children
Fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring their children to the doctor in Pakistan. While fever itself is not a disease — it's the body's natural defense mechanism — knowing when to seek medical attention can be life-saving.
When Is a Fever Dangerous?
- Temperature above 104°F (40°C) in any age group
- Fever lasting more than 3 days without improvement
- Fever in infants under 3 months old (any temperature above 100.4°F)
- Associated seizures (febrile convulsions)
- Child appears lethargic, refuses to drink fluids
- Rash appearing alongside fever (could indicate dengue or measles)
Home Management Tips
For mild fevers (below 102°F), you can manage at home with tepid sponging, adequate fluid intake, and age-appropriate doses of paracetamol. Avoid aspirin in children under 16. Keep the child lightly dressed and ensure good ventilation.
Pakistan-Specific Considerations
In Pakistan, seasonal fevers are common during monsoon (dengue) and summer (typhoid). Always consider these endemic diseases when a child presents with persistent fever. Blood tests including CBC and dengue NS1 antigen should be done early.
